Durangoguy, which transfer case do you have? Did replacing those parts allow you to shift between modes without going through the whole "swerving back and forth in reverse" thing?

Hydra, has yours always required that much effort to get back into 2WD? I talked to my dad the other night, who has a 98 Durango with the same transfer case we have. He bought it new, and told me all he's ever had to do is back up a foot or two in a straight line to complete transfer case shifts. Makes me think there's still something not quite right going on with it.

I did talk to my girlfriend and found out that she had driven it in 4WD (doesn't remember if it was FT or PT) for the entire winter before the front diff, well, basically just exploded. I did explain to her (very delicately, so as to not damage my sex life ) that that was probably a bad idea. lol. Makes me curious as to what problems that might have caused in the transfer case. How tough a job is it to open the case up and poke around for possible problems? (I've rebuilt engines from the block up, so I've got some capability. Just always stayed away from transmissions and transfer cases, though, so I don't know a whole lot about them.)

On a happier note, I did crawl under and check the lube in the front diff the other day, and it's fine. The burnt smell I described in my first post had me concerned, but now I'm confident that the smell just came from the overflow getting on the hot engine.

I have the 242 t-case.
Yes i have to drive a good distance in reverse but never side to side.. I hve found a way to do it with just backing up a foot or 2 but i am sure more would agree its bad for the t-case.. I put the transmission in neutral... shift the t-case to 4low.. put it in drive move a foot or so. put the trans back in neutral.... pop the t-case in neutral then 4h then put it in drive you will hear a thud.. then put the trans back in drive pull forward and push the t-case back in to 2wheel. that is the ONLY way i have found to do it with out driving in reverse.
As far as cracking the T-case open the hardest part about the whole thing is getting those 2 bolts out of the top of the t-case where it bolts to the trans. they are a PITA. once you do get it out set it up on a clean table with a bunch of rags cause it will leak trans flid everywhere. take out the bolts and pop off a few clips that are on the shafts and use a screwdriver in the pry slots on the side to spread the case.. its very simple and only comes part one way and only goes back one ws as well.. just dont do what i did and think the seals will be ok.. since you have it out and open replace all the seals.. again if you need any more help let me know.

Wow.

I'd just rather back up.

My T-case did this before and after one of the best in the market worked on the case with my custom build. It has always worked this way and many people just do it. When you are backing up all you need to do is turn the wheel all the way to one side back up about 3 feet and then to the other side and back up 3 feet. Then just back up normal. For the distance.

Tring to remember all that with the switch is hard durangoguy16.

It also sounds like something is loose. Everyone just backs up like I said.

I don't know why you would EXPECT that response.

Sounds like you got your own thing goin on and thats ok. But I think you got something going loose in your T-Case.

This is the first alternitive I've heared of. I tried it and it didn't work?

DOnt worry man i wasnt saying it in a bad way. i am pritty sure i dont have anything loose in my t-case because it works perfectly with the exception of coming out of 4wheel when i want it to. same as most.. but who knows..
