2002 Durango gear shift
the gear safety switch gets stuck... over the years the grease wears down and the little latch sticks and won't allow you to take it out of park...
I'll try to search for the old thread for you. But basically what you do is take the pastic cover off from around the gear selector, and grease the latch, you'll be able to figure out what it is, its the thing that looks like it inhibits the movement of the gear selector...

My 2002 does that sometimes. I try pressing on the brake harder and moving the steering wheel. Luckily it has only happend 2 times and came out of it pretty quickly. ButI've only had my truck a couple of months too.

Links is broke but your advice should help me a bunch. It just did this yesterday and scared the stuffin out of me, I was assuming it was a safety interlock like several other vehicles I've worked on. I'll work on the wife's 2002 Durango this weekend. 140000 miles and I just enjoy the heck out of it. It's an SLT plus with a 360 and 4wd.
Thanks a bunch,
Chip.

I simply sprayed some WD40 above the brake peddle area along the steering column, and down the gear shift around the rubber casing. This worked well the two times the shifter wouldn't get out of park.
