The upper. Where the upper hose connects to the engine.
Make sure the new T-stat gets but into the engine the same way it came out. Spring down.
Also, I always test my new T-stat before installing it in hot water on the stove with a thermometer and make sure it opens at the right temp. I have had bad brand new T-stats before that are no good.

Wizard;
Since you have the 4.7 liter, your T stat is at the engine end of the bottom hose. There are two nuts that hold on a plastic housing to the engine. Be careful though as those two bolts are knownto break easily. I would suggest soaking them good with some PB Blaster or WD 40 and let it sit overnight before you tackle the job.
