Default Power steering problem, need help diagnosing.

Last night i checked my wifes '01 durango with 5.9 cause she said it was making a noise when turning. So i checked it and it was empty, so i was like ok i work 10 hr days,6days a week, im a dumbass for not checking her vehicle sooner. I get to orielleys and when i start to turn in the parking spot, the engine is dragged down and almost stalls. I turn off the engine, wait a minute then open the PS cap, and its splashes on my hand full actually over full its all the way to the top. can anyone tell me what the problem is, is it a bad PS pump, or is it something in the steering box? thanks for the info.

Griffin:

Your 01 has a rack and pinion, not a gear box. Could be your pump, or the rack could be going bad.Not much else to go wrong.

Make sure your serpentine belt is not so worn, or getting wet in some way that it is slipping.

That could also be caused by a failing/weak tensioner.

its possible that you added fluid when the engine was hot, and then checked it a day later when the engine was cold (or visa versa)... There are actually two full lines on the resevoir, one for hot one for cold temp and theres about 200mL difference between the two levels...

no, it was about 20min after i first checked it that it was full. i was at orielleys to buy some power steering fluid to fill it up. Is it possible that some how the lines have become clogged?
