Rebuild or Replace NV233 Transfer Case??
The transmission shop tells me that the very bad whine in my 140,000 mile old 2001 Durango is coming from the transfer case. Is it worth it to have the transmission shop rebuild that unit for $375 plus parts? The alternative is to get a 49,000 mile old unit froma local salvage yard for $275 and have them swap that one in.
Got any advice for me??
Thanks!!

Mike:
I vote for just getting a second unit and doing the swap, as long as you can get a reliable and/or warranted replacement.
BTW, a month back I shipped the NV 233 from my 01 to Texas so a fellow's Dakota truck could live again. It had 56k on it, and was 100%.
Good luck with your project. Don

My take on it would be buy the parts online and rebuild it yourself. I have rebuilt my 242 tcase and I am sure they arntthat different. Just pay attention to how it comes apart and take picts as you pull it apart to aid in putting it back together.. there isnt anything in a t-case that the normal wrencher cant handle. I wouldnt advise rebuilding a tranny but just the t-case you can do yourself. Keep in mind that parts will be close to equal tolabor if you have a shop do it.
Rebuild it. That way you know what you got not to mention a waranty.
