Default Overdrive Problem

2001 SLT/RT AWD/4X4 5.9 (vin comes up SLT/RT)

Had trans svc'd because it wasn't downshifting to 1st gear, ran fine for 2 weeks then I notice on the freeway it started slipping out of top gear(overdrive). Runs fine in all other gears, thought the bands were worn but I have no hesitation and it pulls hard in all other gears. Someone told me the OD linkage or sensor may be bad or worn from the previous problem. Does anyone know anything about this or had this problem?

Thanks for you help.

Could also be the harmonic balancer?

I don't think so.

Sounds like the trans is on it's last leg. There is a problem that has caused another. 1st is the problem with the downshift. This could have caused metal fragments to enter the system. Problem is I would assume that the over working in second gear caused heat and small amounts of metal fragments to enter the system.

The fragments can hang solenoid up causing this problem. What I would do is take it back and make them flush the entire system forward and reverse. If this doesn’t help then I think you might be looking into a rebuild.

Possible problems include:
Governor Solenoid, Valve Body, Shift Solenoids.

I have had the same problem with my Durango. like the big guy said your trans is on its last leg. The clutch gears on the insidehave gone bye bye, everything else is right there aswell. your best solution is to change the tranny. google 24 hour auto care. they rebuilt my tranny with a heavy duty shift kit. my Problems are gone..
