Default Deactivate 15mph locks on a '98

I have a 1998 Durango. Can the automatic 15mph door lock feature be owner deactivated. I don't mind the feature but a bad squealing sound has developed - I think it's coming from the rear hatch door. If it can't be deactivated, any suggestions on why the squeal is happening and can I fix it without going to the shop.

Sounds like the solenoid sticking from the hatch door. Try manually unlock/relock to see if you can unstick it? Otherwise, time to get into the hatch door to see why its sticking?

I know they can be owner-deactivated since we did it on the wife's 2000 Durango and on my '04 Dak. I think the instructions are in the owner's manual, if memory serves...

Deactivating it is ok if you don't have kids, otherwise, it is a unwise thing to do. Nowadays, I think all manufacturers have this feature as default.

You can still use the child locks if you need that extra protection.

Kids all grown-up so that's not an issue. There's nothing about deactivating in the owner's manual. Anyone ever do it? Thanks to all for the comments.

If it's like my '02, turn the key On/Off 3x times and hold the Door Lock button to LOCK for a few seconds.

As for the lock, spray it with PB Blaster and let it set for a few. I normally have to do this with mine in Winter after a wash here and there.

If my memory serves correctly my 98 D owner's manual say you have to get a dealer to activate/deactivate the automatic locks
