Default Jet Chip Help!!!!! 4.7

Hello, I am looking for some help with my 00' D 4.7 slt+ 4x4. I am the original and it has 100k. I have just added the 3" cat back magnaflow exhaust. Wife complained a bit, I love it, and she'll get over it.
So, I just got in the mail a stage II Jet chip which I will add as soon as I run all the 87 out of my tank and reload with 91 and bolt on an intake system. Jet did tell me the 180 degree thermostat was a nice thing to do but as far as real performance values it would only be in the margins. this all leads me to the questions I have about the Jet chip.

1. Is there any other ECU gadgets available for the 4.7? ie. hypertech, programers????
2. What happens when I run 87 octane through my stage II chip?(I realize that no gas "goes through" it, just in case)
3. Does this chip really help a guy driving his kids to day care or should I let someone who is at the track have it. (please keep in mind that I MUST be pinned in my seat leaving the light on the day care trips...)
4. Is there any harm in adding this chip to the D when I am set up with a 192 thermostat, 3"cat back stuff and just a K&N drop in?

any comments would be greatly appreciated. Love this site and thank anyone in advance for any advice!

Hard to say. Depends on the Jetchip. If the Jetchip requires you to run 91 octane, and you are running 87, then your motor may ping or run poorly. I have a 2000 R/T that requires 91 octane. Ran 87 octane only one time and that's because it was an emergency situation where I was out of gas and cannot find 91 octane gas nearby. Man, my Durango spit and sputtered, hated 87 octane. Good thing it did not mess up any of my sensors.

I plan to buy a Hypertech III programmer for my 2000 R/T. And yes, they do make the Hypertech programmer III for the 4.7's as well. From what I seen on the hypertech programmer, it is a no brainer programming your OEM chip. Plus you can restore your OEM chip back to factory settings. Hypertech can accomodate your exhaust and intake changes as well.

Hey thanks! I could not find anything for the 4.7 at Hypertech, I must have looked right at it. Even the local 4x4 shop said the only thing I could do was the Jet. Anyway, I am making all the changes, I have done the exhaust and thermostat. I have the Jet chip and have not put it in until my intake arrives and I run all the 87 out. This is tough waiting through all these phases, I cant wait until it's all done. So as a bench mark this morning at the light I just hammered it (never done this to my D in all of its 100k miles) and it squealed for about 3 seconds and off I went. I imagine your RT will lay a patch. I'll let you know what it does after everyting is done. Thanks again, and if the Jet / premium thing doesnt work out, I'll be lookin for that programmer.
Thanks again

If you cannot wait until you burn out the 87 octane, just go out and buy a can or two of that 108 octane boost to boost your octane. You could be right about hypertech not having anything for 4.7l, I was just assuming on that. Best to contact Hypertech at their website to see if they have any or plan on making any for the 4.7's.

Jet Chip = garbage (return it if you can)

Hypertech = slightly better than the Jet Chip, but still a waste of money.

The question you have to ask yourself is "How fast do I want to go, and how much am I willing to spend to get there?"

The advanced timing of the aftermarket programs requires you to use a higher octaine to prevent detonation. If your wife accidentally puts in 87, there's no telling what might happen. It might run fine, or it might detonate itself a headgasket leak. There are too many other factors in play to determine what might happen if you use to low of an octaine. But do you really want to have to keep putting premium in your truck just so you can be 0.1 second faster in the 1/4 mile?

If you want a mod you can really feel, look into getting a higher (numerically) gear ratio.

Hey SniperRT, I read your coments and wanted to make some nasty coments to you and use the phrase "rain on parade" as I just spent $162 on the Jet chip. Sadly I cannot, your right. I really thought I'd feel a difference, and I do not. I'll be ebaying the jet chip right away and just stick with the 87 octane. What a waste. I'll look into the gearing, good suggestion. I do haul a boat around occasionally that's about 4500 lbs. I also like to do about 75 on the highway, any recomendations for ratio's?

Thanks

Just remember, by going to a higher gear ratio, you get more towing power and off the line power, but sacrifice gas mileage. So it's all in the balance of things of speed, power vs fuel mileage and longevity. Also, as you have a 4x4, whatever gear ratio you plan to change, you have to get 2 sets, one for the front, and one for the rear. My R/T Durango has 3.92 gears and FULL time AWD and requires 91 octane gas. I am suffering at 11/14 on city/highway driving. Could have been a little worse, but used a K&N filter to replace the stock paper filter and was able to get me 1 mpg better on C/H mileage.
