Sway Bars
I recently posted about a noise my 2000 Durango was making after I took it in for the recall. I took the Durango back to the dealer and he told me it was the sway bar bushings squeeking. Now, not that I don't believe a dealer, but I was unaware that my Durango had sway bars. This was something I was planning on installing on the truck because I use it to haul a horse trailer. But, can someone please tell me what sway bars look like, where I can find them on the truck, and should they be squeeking?? Thank you!
Well, since no one else will post...
There is a sway bar on both the front and rear of my durango (99 slt+). On the front, it is a bar that is connected to the frame (via two large bushings) and to the lower control arm. The bar is located between the rack and pinion and the radiator. The sway bar end links are what actually connect the bar to the control arm. On top of the sway bar end link, there is two bushings sandwiching the sway bar. Shoot some WD-40 on both sides. You can also shoot some lube on the ones that connect the sway bar to the frame. It is somewhat possible for those to squeak. The best thing to do for that is to have a buddy push down on the front bumper and try to locate the squeak. WD-40 works good, but it will eventually wash away. I had to replace my end links, the end link ball joint was wore out. They ran me $20 a piece.

Thank you for finally replying!! I was beginning to wonder if anyone out there would. Now my question is, do all Dodge Durangos have sway bars? Are these the same type of sway bars that would be installed on the car for hauling a horse trailer? I am just trying to figure out if I already have the equipment I need in order to haul, or if I need to have it installed. Thanks!
Do you know if you durango has the tow package? Mine has the tow package and includes the rear sway bar. You should be able to climb under your durango and check to see if it is there. Like I said before on the front, look for a bar about 1" -2" in diameter that is connected to the frame and lower control arms. On the rear, look for a thinner bar that is connected to the axle and the frame. On the rear, the bar will be connected to the axle and the endlinks will be what connects the bar to the frame. I am not sure if all durangos have sway bars...however the reason these sway bars are there is to lessen the sway when turning the vehicle. I would assume that is the reasoning behind the rear sway bar is to lessen the sway while towing.
All Durangos have sway bars and almost all have or will have a squeaking problem with the bushings. The best thing to do is remove the bar and clean the bushings very well, then apply some waterproof chassis grease to them and reinstall. Yes, it makes a mess but they will stay quiet. I use Redline synthetic chassis lube, works great...about 4.00 a tube. A tube will last you a lifeteime.
