Default Can this be done?

Is it possible to swap a 46re transmission into a 99 Durnago 4wd with the 5.2? If so what needs to be done to make this work? Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!!

It's the same block so I would think so.

Computer flash I think would need to be completed. Other than that I think it will bolt up with some minor parts. What's wrong with the original?

After the transmission gets hot I lose first gear. Not sure exactly why but probably has something to do with the clutch pack. I know the torque converter would have to be replaced with the 46re one, but I'm not sure what else would need to happen to make this work if its even possible. Replace TCM with 46re one? Starter? Flex Plate? ECM flash/swap? HELP and THANKS!!

XO:

I am surprised that our resident tranny guys have not weighed in more on this one already. A tranny guy I am not, so I will say do a search here and you should come up with some info. The 46re is beefier than the 44re, so quite a few folks have made the swap/upgrade knowing that their 5.2 will not harm the 46re since it is made to live behind the more powerful 5.9.

yes it is possible, a bunch of guys in the 2nd gen dak forum have done it i think, and there is a guy over there that did the 3.9-5.9 swap and kept his 44 re trans, so they are compatible (same bolt pattern)

and i think some 5.2s even came w/ the 46re trans, not 100% on that, but i think

Thanks.. Thays one hurtle. Now I just need to know if anything needs to be changed/modified in order to make this work. Torque converter i know for sure, but would I need to change the TCm to one designed for a 46re? or are they the same?
