2000 Dodge Durango towing capacity=2000 lbs on the 4.7 v8 engine?
Quick introduction.. Recenlty bought my 2000 durango with 91k miles.. I inted to use mostly to haul a boat once I get one and for camping trips.. I chose the Durango because it was cheaper compared to other SUV with 3rd row seating like the Expedition, Surbubans etc..
Back on topic I was researching the car more to get the actual towing capacity of my vehicle. I believe mine has the tow package on it straight from the dealer but not sure though. According to this website the towing capacity for my Durango is only 2000 pounds which I thought was probably incorrect. I went to another website (autotrader.com) to research the towing capacity and they had different ratings for my durango. One rating had it at 5600 and another has it for 2000 lbs.. So which one is it? Any info would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

according to the manual with the 4.7 these are the max towing capacities
3.55 axel ratio 4350lbs trailer weight
3.92 axel ratio 5650lbs trailer weight
and the 2000, according to the manual all dodge trucks/SUVs are rated to tow that from the factory w/o anything special

I think the 2000 lbrating may be talking about the load on the durango itself, and not the weight of the trailer. 2000 lb on the durango may be max for full seat occupancy and all the gear placed in back and on top of durango.
Thanks for the replies guys.. I figured that it was incorrect.. A 2000lbs towing capacity for a 4.7 liter v8 seems to light. Now how do i know what my axle ratio is? sorry kind of noob with this stuff..
Look on the rear differental cover and there are about 8-10 bolts that hold the cover on. One of the bolts usually toward the top there should be a small tag on it.
Ok.. looks like I got the 3.55 axel ratio found it in the glove box.. thanks for the help again guys.. What are some cheap ways to make my durango more powerful so I can haul more?

you could do a gear swap to the 3.92, or some even go the 4.12, but idk how much that costs and its double if you have a 4x4(two axels that need to change)
According to Dodge, my 2ooo 4.7 4x4 is rated to tow 6500 lbs. I am using mine to tow a 6000lb travel trailer. It is slow going, and runs hot on hills but otherwise works fine. I am also interested in changing up the gear ratio for more power and torque.
Of course I do have the 5.9L.
