I upped my gear ratio to 4.56:1 (from the factory 3.55:1) and it will pull the snot out of my 7,000 lbs tralier. It will run with the cruise on at 70 without even downshifting up all but the bigger hills.
Of course I do have the 5.9L.
well your just a show off lol
yyur12: i have never heard of a 4.7 w/ that kind of towing capacity, which gears do you have? 4.10s i assume
I've got the tow package on my 03 Dakota with the 4.7 and 545RFE. The package has a heavy duty radiator and a beefy transmission cooler. Also has a plug for a trailer brake controller near the OBDII port. I towed the car you see below on that 4 wheel trailer, from Virginia to Atlanta. About eight hours each way. The trailer brakes were great... I would never tow something like that and expect the truck's brakes to do all the work.
Anyway, I kept the overdrive off and it towed like a champ. People say the 5.9 has more low end grunt... well it probably does, but I had zero issues and at higher revs on hills, etc., that's where it really excelled. The 4.7 loves to rev with O/D off and would cruise at a 100 if I was stupid. Overall, it towed effortlessly, even with the back hunched down nearly to the ground. Honestly I was more worried about the engine mounts from all the torque. Towards the end, they were squeaking every now and then, when moving off from a stop.
Before the trip, I single drain and filled the ATF. The diff fluid was changed about a year before that. I drained the tranny again when I got back, which was something I was planning on doing anyway.
ATF Cooler...
As it sits today....
