Radio stops working intermittently
Hi all...new to the forum...looks like a great site though.
I've got a 99 D, 5.9L, 2WD SLT. Got 172K miles on it and have never had any trouble with it other than regular maintenance.
Until last week...my stock radio decided to perform intermittently. When I turn on the D, the radio works fine. It may work for 30 seconds, 5 minutes or 30 minutes...then I will hear a pop noise and no more sound from the speakers. There is still power to the radio, the presets and dials appear to work but no sound from the speakers.
If I turn the D off and let it sit a little while, then turn it back on...the radio comes back on but will then quit randomly again as described above.
Any ideas on where to start to fix this? I have a long 6 hour drive coming up in 3 weeks...don't think I go that long without music.
TIA
Jeff

Sounds like you have a bad amp or your amp is shorting out. I dont remember where its located in the truck. Possibly behind the drivers side kick panel. You could probably bypass the AMP and run new lines to the speakers but they would probably sound like crap. I would check your power and grounds first.
So...found the amp behind the passenger side kick panel. Checked all the wiring from HU to the amp and from amp to speakers. Wiring appears to be fine.
I'm pretty sure the amp is bad and want to replace it. I've searched other threads here that gave me ideas on replacement amps.
The next question: Is there a trick to getting the existing amp out. The amp appears to be mounted on a bracket with 2 bolts on the bottom...very easy to get to and remove. But there appears to be another, single bolt holding the top of the bracket that I cannot get to as it's way up top by the glove box.
Do you have to remove the dash to get to this top bolt out in order to remove the infinity amp?
Anybody else already removed/replaced this amp?
