Default Check Gages / Batery Gages over charge

Hi I have a Durango 2001 4x4 recently the "Check Gages" light came on then the the Battery gage is all the way to the right hand corner, then after a wile it goes down to the middle and the warning light die's out, any body with help or advise out there, could this be the Alternator or can I only replace a rectifier unit? is this going tho be an expensive fix?

Sounds like your regulator could be on its way out. At any rate, I would get the Alt tested before you begin to damage other components from excessive voltage.

Hold on the n8ech,

First of all the voltage regulator is solely located in in the PMC. The diodes on the rectifier bridge are usually what goes out in the alternator so at about $80 bucks this is the better choice not to mention it is returnable unlike a PCM and the cost associated. If one is out then just buy a new one or rebuild at your digressions. But you are going to spend the same cash.

If I where you I would first get the battery load tested. There could be a broken cell grounding the system out. Take it out of the vehicle to make sure you don't fry the wiring or anything else. If that isn't it take out the alternator and take it in for a diagnostic run. Maybe just do it together.

Auto Zone or Checker will do this for free. If you need to buy something let me recommend DuraLast from Auto Zone. Only buy a NEW alternator! No REBUILD!

I also noticed that my Durango would overcharge the battery only during very cold temperature environments. My gauge would go past the 14 volt mark, but under normal temps, it charges below the 14 volt mark.

The battery is probably getting old. But cold temps really work it.

When temps fall the battery always loose's a good amount. I wouldn't worry but maybe start to look at if if problems continues to occure. In fact, hasn't it been a while since you changed it out?

If the Alternator was a rebuild then it still could be it. Take it to Auto Zone or Checker Auto and have them test the system for you. It's free and they just wheel out a tester directly to your car.It takes like 5 minutes and all you have to do is pop the hood and hold some RPM's.
