Rear pinion seal
During a routine visit for Transmission check up, the repair facility did a courtesy under vehicle inspection. I was advised that the rear pinion seal was leaking. I was wondering if this is a major repair job? I am in Indy this week and need to head back to Pittsburgh at the end of the week. I do knowthe implications of letting it go, I have had a differential lock up on a previous vehicle. Any suggestions, I know it is Christmas but I want to get it repaired as soon as possible, but don't want to get taken to the preverbial cleaners.

How badly is it leaking? If it is just wet or minor drips I would just make sure the oil level is full and drive it home. If it somehow got torn and is leaking all the oil out, then it would be a must do before it goes anywhere. The pinion seals usually start to moisten the housing as they age which is no big deal as long as it is kept full.
CASE CLOSED:
Mean, I got the estimate for about $150-$200 that was a DIFF seal r/r service, seal r/r plus fluid r/r... Was able to get Indianapolis-Pittsburgh-Indianapolis. Got it repaired the other day.. Labor 1 hr $80 Seal $32 and $9 in taxes. It must have needed a quick topoff of fluid because it doesnt show a charge and I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt that the procedure did call for replacing the fluid. It is not leaving a blood trail and does not sound abnormal during operation so sounds like we are good. Thanks for your help.
