Default Heat problem

Hi,

I have a 1998 Dodge Durango V8 5.9l.
My engine temp on the dash was between 55 and 100. The heat temp from the heater was medium sometimes. Never warm and never cold.
I've got a new thermostat and go to the mechanic close to my place. My prestone need change, new thermostat and something was blocking the air entrance to the heater.

I said ok. They changed everything. Cost me 325$ and now it is coolest than before. When we checked before I left, wam was coming out, but in the garage...and outside it was +1. And now, at -10, it is cool in the tuck an the engine temp on the dash is vey close to the left line, probably aound 65.

What can I do? I just bought the Haynes manual and I dont want to go again to the mechanic.

Thanks all.

It's called under heating.

Here is some info.

And also, I have had many of thermastats that are bad out of the box. They really have to be tested in a pot of boiling water before installation. It might be stuck wide open.

The other problem it could be is if antifreeze is sliping past the T-stat neck. Basiclly the neck that houses the T-stat is metal. The intake manifold is aluminum. The metal rusts and allows antifreeze to slip by without going through the T-stat. You can test this by feeling the upper radiator hose and see if it is hot and maybe the sending unit is bad and the heater core is plugged. You can temp the fluid coming out of this hose because it should be the hottest after going through the T-stat. If everything is ok try to pinch the top raidiator hose off and see how it heats up. ( BE CAREFUL!!!! ) This will insure that the engine is working properly.

I had a bad neck. The OEM ( Dealer ) cost for replacement a couple of years ago was $8. I cleaned up the mounting surface between the intake manifold and installed a tested T-stat ( 180 Degree F, It's a lot better on the motor ) and new neck and this cured most of my problem. I still run cold about 140 F but it is a lot better. I think the T-stat opens right now on mine but the water pump can turn a lot of water through the Bypass.

For the money spent, I'd take it back!

Hi,
here what I did yesterday. I went back to the mechanic and said to them nothing was working. They use a pressurised hose to clean the hoses at the firewall, it was blocked. I bought a new Mopar t-stat and they installed it. There is heat coming out in the truck now but, I need to go around 2000RPM if I want it a little bit hot. It is below 5 to 9 degrees F. here. I dont know if it is normal. When it comes back to 1000 rpm, the heat is going down and it is a little bit warm (between cold and hot). Sorry I usually speak french. If the RPM is going to 3000, there is a lot of hot heat coming out. Is it because its below 9 ? Do I have to put something in the front of the truck ? Here in Quebec, winter is very hard...It is just that I need to work with it all the day and need to open the doors and windows often.

My wife have a Nissan Versa and I need open the windows because it is to hot. Is the Dodge Durango have a bad heating system? My dad was a cop and told me that the DODGE cars were always the worst in the winter and no one wanted to use them for patrol.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I'm thinking that the cluch fan is engaging too much. Might want to chage it out.

I don't think it's a Dodge problem but you think about it, this motor is old shcool and the heating systems is the same. If you go to the newer cars then they are different. This 5.9L and 5.2L block and system has been used since about 1962 with some few changes.

If you open the hood there is a small black seal like section in front of the radiator and front clip that if you wanted to install a piece of cardboard would help. I would look into it and make sure you don't cover up the trany cooler if equipt.
