2000 durango 4.7l suddenly??? HELP!!
I am a new member of this forum, and i have a problem. i have a 2000 durango with 182k on it. i've had it since it was new and NEVER had a problem. i beet the heck out of this thing and it keeps running! anyway, the other day, i went to the gas station to get some things, but i forgot my id. so i went back home and left the truck running outside wile i ran in to get my id. when i cam out, the reuck was "ticking" very louldy on the left side of the engine. it has never lost oil pres, or ran out of oil or anything like that. i have been runing royal purpal oil in it since 90k. i have no ideai what could be wrong. any information you might have would be greatly apreciated! thanks.
Ck the oil level, if its full, I would recommend to change oil and filter, but before you change the oil, add 1 qt of atf to the engine and drive for 15 to 20 mins and then change oil and filter. You may have a lifter that causing your noise. It wouldn't be a broken valve spring, because you didn't say the engine was misfiring.
exhaust manifold bolt, usually on the back side, common ailment causing knocking.
or
lifter due to oil rundown
or
4.7 typically 'slap' a little anyway. Perhaps yours returned to normal.
+1 on the change the oil/see what happens. You may put an eye on the bolt.
Good luck,

thanks for your reply guys. it is due for a change. using atf is a new concept. i usually use engine flush, is atf better? do i need to drain a quart first? i have heard about the manifold issue on these trucks. my left side manifold is bad actually. just don't want to lay on cardboard in -20* weather and fix it. this noise i have is unlike anything i have ever heard before. i am 99.9% sure it is not a maninfold leak. it is a VERY loud tick up on top of the engine, and a slight knock on the bottom side. if anyone has any other ideas, i would like to hear them. i always enjoy hearing everyone's input. thanks
Engine flush maybe the same as ATF, The old timers use ATF because there wasn't engine flush back 20 years ago. Has far as the slight knock, it maybe time for rod bearings or a piston slap.
While Royal Purple is some awesome stuff, I would ditch it... It keeps the motor damn clean on the inside, but it is just too noisy... I have used it in each car that I have had and made each car louder... Mobil1 or Castrol are two of the quietest oils I have used... Just a though...
thanks for the info. today i have been driving all day today, and the knock hasn't come back yet? i think it might be a stuck/sticky lifter. i will try the atf trick, and let you know how it goes? is there anyway to tell if my knock is rod bearings. can the rod bearings be changed with the engine in?
