2000 d transfer case leaking
My D has a leak at the rear of the transfer case where the two piece output extension bolts to the main case. Can this extension be taken out with transfer in truck. How big of a job is it.Is there a gst or rtv? 4.7 nv231 ?
Is the fluid red/ brown? It may not be transfer case oil. It maybe transmission oil. Ck the fluid level on the t-case, if it running out of the hole, its not leaking from any seals. Also if the fluid is low on the transmission, you may have some abnormal shifts.
I had a similar issue with the trans output seal, you can never be sure untill you drop it if its coming from between the trans/x-fer. Its a lil task to get that repaired so while the x-fer was out we replaced its seals too.
Should come right off.
Remove drive shaft. Loosen the bolts, turn the extention housing with a force, or tap with a rubber mallet to break the seal. Remove the snap ring. Check for oil pickup and disconect if nessesary. Remove the housing. Replace the gasket. Use RTV "Gold" is what I like.
