Infamous Auto Shutoff Relay Clicking Issue
So the more I've been searching on the internet, the more I've learned that there are many durango owners having the problem I am.
My 1998 Durango with the 5.2L started shutting down on me without warning a couple of weeks ago. The Auto Shutoff Relay is clicking when I turn the ignition on and none of my gauges move. Sometimes the security light will flash, sometimes my ABS light will come on, and my Odometer flashes. I have replaced the relay and that did nothing. I can pull the relay, turn the ignition on, and my guages work again but the Durango still won't start. There is plenty of fuel pressure. The only issue I see under the hood is there is a bit of corrosion on my positive battery cable. If I leave the Durango and come back to it later (anywhere from 1 hour to 1 day later) it usually starts up fine.
If any others have had this issue, what's the fix? Thanks in advance for your help!

+1 on the bad battery/connection
No comment on this being your first post ever with, "Infamous", "I've searched and see this everywhere" and "many Durango owners having the problem" since I don't recall reading the plethora of Auto Shutoff Relay Clicking Issues that you seem to have been able to unearth and uncover.
Ever work in Egypt?

Gentlemen, thanks for responding. I will test the battery tonight. Those factory battery cables are not cheap!
IndyDurango - if you do a google search on this issue, you'll find many who have had this same problem and weren't able to find a shop that could fix it, hence the "Infamous". Proudly, this is only my first post because this is the only problem I've ever had with my Durango and it's got over 138K on it.

Corn,
Glad to hear that the D has treated you very well. With 138k, you could post more to help those that don't have the same luck you and I have head (leaning on 200k here.)
FWIW, I visit the D forums just a little here and there. I can tell you that common issue isn't a common issue afterall. K.
Best of luck moving on to 150k for you!

LOL
A little FYI, any time I got that clicking relay was from a poor battery connection. Pull the positive and negative terminals and clean them up and make sure you tighten them up really well. That will most likely fix your issue...

Google Toyota, Saab, VW / Audi and others on the "sludge" issue.
I have owned a few of the "infamous 2.7L" engines that people claim sludge issues with.
I use Mobile 1 synthetic and never have had an issue. matter of fact I still have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that I purchased in 2000 with 15,000 miles on it, The car now has over 180,000 miles and is running strong, only things I have had to change was upper radiator hose and a crank shaft sensor, would take the car anywhere on a trip and feel perfectly safe.
I personally feel people who have the sludge issue are people who do not maintain there vehicle, or the people who visit these quick lube places that uses cheap oil and notorious for under filling or over filling, not to mention 90% of these people don't even check to see if they quick lube place did the job correct, they just assume and drive on without ever checking. (stay away from those cheap oils such as Havoline and Quaker State such as these fast quick lube places use, they may meet SAE, but in my opinion they should not.)
If you stick with quality oil (preferably synthetic), change every 3000-3500 miles, I don't think you would see an issue with sludge, as I have not on several of my vehicles that others have claimed to have issues with.
