2000 durango tranny help
I need help.. I recently bought a 2000 durango about a month and a half ago. then the other night the tranny went out on me. i think i am going to try and save money and rebuild it myself is there any one who can help with diagrams or sources any thing would help. it has the 5.9 its a 2000 and its 4wd. anything helps. and how difficult is it. i have never rebuilt a tranny so anything will help. thanks for your time.
If you never rebuilt a trans before it might be better to get some one who has to help you. There's different size shims for end play, seals must be put in a certain way and special tools that are need for the OD unit.I hope this info helps you out.
Trannies are tough you definitely should get someone with experience to help out. That said stay organized or you will get that sucker apart and will be scratching your head when it is time to get it put back together.
What happened with the tranny anyway?

It shifted kinda wierd kind of like a little slip. then in the mornings for like a week and a half when i backed out of my drive way then put in in drive it took like 4-8 seconds for it to kick in drive then it drove fine like normal. then one night it sat for like 20 min runing and then i got in the truck put it in reverse and it wouldnt move for like 20 sec then it moved i put it in drive and it slipped all the way home not shifting out of first til like 5 grand and it then i changed the fluids with atf 4 and drove it was still funny slipping after 30 seconds of driving and then eventually it just stopped moving.
thanks for all your guys help so far. i think im gonna take it out does anybody know how hard it is, how long it takes, or have the steps on how to do it

I just finished taking my 46RE out of my 2000 with a 5.9 and 4wd. It took a little longer than I thought, mainly because of learning where everything is. I have a friend who is a Certified Dodge mechanic specializing in transmissions so I had a good reference library. One trick he did tell me about was the cover plate for the torque converter. He informed me that because of the stud for the starter you need to get the bellhousing bolts out, transmission loose, shift it back about an inch, then remove the cover and torque converter bolts to the flex plate. He's going through the transmission for me and I hope to start putting it back in the next day or so.
I had multiple problems. The shifter ball/spring on the valve body stuck for one. When I dropped the valve body, I found pieces of the gears from the clutch pack. Also found one of the band anchors laying on the valve body. I have to have a rebuild kit, drum, bands etc. The valve body seems to be checking good. He also reminded me to check the transmission cooler whne putting it in by measuring the output of the pump to ensure the tranny stays cool. We'll know more in a day or so as I put it back in.
The large bolts on the bell housing left and right sides where tough to get out. They were seized. Luckily, I didn't lose any threads. Moving the exhaust provided no help in clearance for removal, so that should save you some time. I dropped the transfer case off the OD unit before taking out the tranny though the service manual said you could leave it on. I didn't have the rear clearance to do that and didn't want to deal with the extra weight. I left the front transaxle intact, but I did place a block underneath the motor on a cross member so I could shimmy the tranny out.
I hope some of this helps you out.

I'll ask a stupid question. What does the tranny fluid look like hollister, and also did you have the bands adjusted at fluid change?I'm a newbie to this forum but,I know tranny's usually give give some warning before complete destruction=I would look at the torque converter as being smoked.Hope ya write back on what it was.
