Default intermitten charging problem

2000 d 4.7. On three different times the wife said the check gauge lite came on and the volts went to the bottom 8volt mark. It threw a 1682 low voltage code. The battery load tested ok and the charging system is 14.1. It was tested when everything was fine and can't get it to act up for me. Never any starting problems and it runs fine. Did the research and found others that have had this problem but no one has said what fixed it. Thanks

Well... dang, I had a problem very similiar to this - but in a Trans-Am - however; I suspect this problem could come up on any alternator..

It was not working right when it got too hot - bearings would heat up, etc - I had a voltage gauge so I could watch it.

When the car was cold or moving, it was fine - when it warmed up and the airflow stopped under the hood, the charge would tank.

Just a thought - may have nothing at all to do with it - it doesn't happen to be a 'cheaper' replacement is it? Heck, even top of the line could do that of course.

It just came to mind when you mentioned that.

If nothing else, get it warmed up and then let it idle for a bit - of course, with the weather around me lately it would almost be impossible for anything at all to overheat, hehe

P1682 Charging System Voltage Too Low Charging system output voltage low.

Might be a fuse or relay. Look under the hood in the main panel.

Check your ground wires=ohm them out for resistance especially motor to chassis and check ur comp connectors and alternator connectors=if she drove through some water may have got stuff alil wet=try hosing the engine down with water lightly with a hose on low if ya live in a warm enough part of the country where ya won't turn ur drive to an ice skating rink-if not do it late saturday nite before the bars let out and watch the drunk drivers do the icecapades<j/k on that one>maybe. You could also put dielectric grease on all terminals and computer terminals. Also ask her if she had the difroster on =the a.c. compressor turns on with it=if the a.c. compressor has a problem engaging might have spiked the amps>rare with out blowin a fuse and also the power outlets aka the extra cigarette lighter sockets one might be get ready to short out>saw a ford e-350 burn it's wiring on one of those=and it was fuse protected=fuse never went but part of the wiring did.

Checked the fuse box and there are no relays for charging system. There is a 140 amp fuse but if it where to intermittenly go bad the guage will only drop to battery voltage not all the way to 0 volts.

I would assume that the lead going into the alternator is to blame. Check the connections on the alternator and clean em up.

It might still be a alternator or battery issue. If the battery has a cell thats grounding the system it would do that. Still a load check should have picked that up.

How old is the battery and Alt?

Not sure how old the battery or alt. is I just bought this about 6 months ago. If I hook a voltmeter to the back of the alt and if it does this again wont that elimanate the battery as being bad. Then move on to the alt. or computor.

You checked your ground wires? If it has been wet out in your area then the wetness would help the truck if it was a grounding problem=if when the weather gets dry and you have problems clean all ground wires especially motor to chassis grounds.Wires can corrode in the insulator and reek havoc with the computer which are grounded to the chassis of the truck.run a new negative battery to chassis ground wire=strip the paint and make a new grounding point if the problem returns an check for corrosion at the computer bolting points=used as the comp ground.
