Default Now onto Front end

Hey, all now it's time to do some work on the front end. As stated in my last post at least the upper ball joints have not been replace since there are still rivets there. I was wanting to take to a shop to get an front end check done but before i do that i think i need to replace the wheel bearing on the drivers side. It's a 98 with 168K miles

Here are the pictures of the 2 front tires these are under a year old.

Drivers:

Pass:

The drivers is worse then the pass side. So i went to do the tire check on both of them. on the pass side when i grab the tire at 12/6 i have no play at all, when i grab at the 10/4 there is a very slight movement.

On the drivers side no matter where i grab the tires it moves alot, up/down/side to side so i'm thinking the wheel hub/bearing is shot.

So what i'm thinking of doing is to replace the drivers side wheel hub(not sure how hard this will be!!, he said the dealership replaced the front bearings last years or so) then drive it to have the rest of the front end checked. I just dont feel comfortable to drive it with the drivers wheel with that much movement.

Balljoints/tie rods will show lateral/horizontal movement so dont plan on it being the hub. When you were putting pressure on the tire (to check for movement) did you watch the control arm tie rod?
I'd say take care of the balljoints first, Uppers and lowers.. A hub shouldnt be failing that early if they were replaced within a year. I really wouldnt worry about the Hub but more the tires on the way to a shop...

i'll look for control arm movement when i get home tonight. The reason i thought hubs was last year had the same problem on my gmc and tires moved the same plus same noise up front. ball joints/tie rod check out fine and was the hub.

Guess i will just start to work on the ball joints then. and then go from there with getting the rest check. this was to be a play/farm toy..but the more i dig and fix this might become daily driver, runs better them the gmc and has 40K less miles. and all for only $100

Can you belive the neighbor drove it like this 60 miles each way to work on those tires!!!

Was thinking while at work today, I think i just going to go ahead and change out the upper/lower ball joints.

What else do you think i should do while it's apart? It's got 168K+ and not idea if anything been done, and since the ball joints are oem bet everything else coudl be to. so should i go ahead and change out the outer tie rods as well? What about inner tie rods?

thanks in advance for info!

Honestly while your at it, why not... I'd recomend it (seeing how you'd need an alignment anywho) so mind as well get her done while your getting dirty. Then it'll be something you wont have to worry about years to come.. It may put a larger dent in your pocket but in the long run with new components/alignment you'll make your tires last a lil longer.

Wow!

I wouldn't drive it right now!

The camber is out and also the toe causing the ware. Do the work then have a 4 wheel alignment done.

Inner and outer tie rods, ball joints.

The first thing I would do is jack up the front end and get a friend over and try to turn the wheels by shaking back and forth and up and down on both sides and have the friend look ware movement at all the moving joints. Don't grease before this as this could fill in the ware spots.

Anything else replace it like pitman arm, and control arm.

Wow! Less than a year old on those tires? To bad you couldn't have it done sooner before the tires were destroyed. Agreed on driving very very little until you get it fixed. My shop just did all that for me in Oct for a tad under $900.

Yea i know... I picked it up on sunday, drove it 5 miles to my house and it has set since then. except for testing the new output sensor on my driveway(400 ft or so) to see if it shifted right, which it did

I dont see how he drove this 60 miles each way to work sometimes 6 days a week. or the fact that his girl and my 2 children went to movies in that thing! I will make sure that i glance at the tires from time to time on his new car!!!!
