Another issue
The Durango was driving fine......but, every once in awhile i would get the check gauges alert because the oil pressure reading zero. thought it was the sending unit. Had no other issues. Then the Durango sat over night. started it in the AM had the check gauges alert because of the oil pressure drove it maybe 4 blocks then i got a lifter tick. So then i knew it was not just the sending unit. So what are the odds of the oil pump going bad? I thought these 5.9 liters where like the salt of the earth like the 302, 350, 318,.....what would cause this issue. i have heard that sludge is a issue with these. please someone in the know....give a hand. The oil pressure is zero....with a mechanical guage. what should i try next before i give it to the .....$$$shop$$$$.
Thanks T

5.9s are rock solid if you take care of them. Doesn't mean an oil pump can't fail. Usual suspect? No. Possible? Sure.
I was thinking maybe your oil gauge was failing (happens) but that wouldn't cause a lifter tick. That's an oil pressure drop.
Sludge is a falsehood. No issues with sludge on the 5.x UNLESS you mix every different kind of oil and standardize on no brand or weight each and every fill. Do that and you are on your own regardless of the motor or brand.

So what would be the usual suspects for a no oil pressure issue...would a oil pump fail every once in awhile then just go. I was thinking maybe sludge because it came and went. i had no other issues it was running fine...then it just came like before (no oil pressure and check guages alert) and has not gone away.
LESSON!
Check the filter. Do a oil change with 10W-40 and change the filter. If the problem is a weak spring on the oi pump or a warn impeller it can do this. I sometimes have issues when exessive heat from pulling on the oil liquifies the oil too much to pick up. Also it can do that if you are runnin low.

If you are set on swapping the oil pump, please show us your milage on the odo and the non-sludge photos you will find in there. It would be valuable and appreciated in regards to future 'sludge' rebuttals.

Say that the oil pump is good where would the oil get blocked to the point where it would not flow up to the lifters? in a step by step how does it go from the pump to the head/lifters? Is there ONE thing that could stop the oil from reaching the lifters other than the oil pump? i will do the oil/filter change and let you know...how it goes. thanks for the input.

For your sake I hope you find it is the oil filter. If it is, we all know that's a cheap fix
Other wise I don't see anything else that could be the prob if you kept up with the maintenance and didn't use cheap oils and filters

THERE IS NO SLUDGE ISSUES HERE!
If you or the previous owner used crappy lubricants or maintenance scheduals then you get whats coming. There is no sludge issues.
Now you want to know whats in line before the heads and sensor........ Check the filter!
