First things first. It could be just a fluke. Take it to Autozone or Advance and have the code read. Report back then we can go from there. Most CEL's are sensor related till we know what the code is no need to get worked up. What were the conditions, idle, driving, stayed on after start up etc... Plenty of knowledge in this forum we just need some info. I was going to ask what engine but I see it in your signature.... so "as you were"...

Ok Folks... its a P0442... Probably a bad gas cap. I had bought one of those locking gas caps when gas prices were so high. Im gonna install the OEM one and see if that does it. NO, the gas cap is not loose. I got gas in it last and I always click it like 4+ times. She is still grounded from the D cause I just got a call that her Grand Am is already gonna cost us $340+ to fix. And they havent even found the MAIN problem yet. UGH!!!
Im sending her back to the Kitchen and laundry room now!

Ditto, I did the same thing, didnt work for me either. Well it might have worked, but Emissions inspections. I even tried putting a additional o ring around the filler neck and it didnt work either. Cap failed emissions, he pulled the o ring off, in front of my face, sent me up to the cashier in a walk of shame, and told the clerk to add $16 for safety, $28 for emissions and $10 for the new fuel cap. Good thing is I passed, got a safety sticker, and emissions pass. but new cap. The aftermarket locking cap didnt work after all, but with the 0442 changing the cap is a good start. Do not hesitate to check the EVAP charcoal canister for dry rotted hoses though. Look carefully with a flashlight, dry rot may take a bit to detect. Glad you got it, in the words of a former 90's era comedy

Are you guys using the right cap? I got a Stant locking cap and haven't had ANY problems since installation... Except for the key not wanting to go in... But some graphite lube fixed that problem instantly! There is a vented cap and non vented... Not sure which one we need...
