I have been having a high pitched grinding noise coming from my D. After searching around I think it is the front hubs. Today I took a right hand turn and I could hear it making a pretty good grinding sound. I jacked up the front to see if there is any play and I have about an inch or so of play on the left front wheel when I move it from the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. It also makes a clicking sound when I free wheel it. The right side has no play at all. So does this sound like a front hub? I want to make sure before I order parts.

Vehicle info- 99 Durango, 4X4, 94K miles.

Yep.

If it is 4 wheel ABS will run you about $225 per front hub. On your '99... unless it has already been done... I strongly suggest at this point you replace the BJs too. Check the TREs as well. If it is all shot, you are looking at $1200 installed for complete BJs/TREs/Hubs. Subtract $200 if it is 2wheel ABS only.

All Gen1 Ds had/have junk BJs. ONLY 2000+ got freebie replacements under a recall... even though the 98s and 99s needed them too. Statistically, the NTSB didn't require Chrysler to extend the recall beyond the 2000 model year.

Thanks indy. The upper BJs have been replaced anlong with the tie rod ends. I went ahead and ordered new hubs, upper control arm bushings and just ordered complete lower control arms since I need bushings and ball joints.
