Default PCV Valve / Oil Useage

Well I didn't do a write up on the PCV replacement. I fuggured if one can't do it then that person shouldn't be working on it!

Anyway I pulled it and looked........It had the Chrysler emblem on it.......Hmmmmm

Now I dont remember changing it out. Hope there isn't 171k on it.......LOL

I sucked on it and it would break loose but it didn't like to. I'm sure there wasn't much going through it. I also noticed oil leakage (nothing new just older) coming from the hose to manifold and residue is protruding down. Also since the rebuild (50k ago) Yeppers it's gettin old...... I've always used about 2 quarts every 4000 miles and I've never used that much before the rebuild. I know the motor was tight and nothing on the plugs at all?

I thought about a plenum gasket and I got to check that tommarrow again but I did it before the final rebuild so I'm sure it's not leaking..... Unless the builder removed my gasket and put their own. I'll find out tommarro.

Still you would think it's going somewhere..... I've used like 3-4 quarts before in 4000 miles expessially when towing even 500 miles total on one change. I think I'm using it but until tommarro and a good flashlight?

Anyway, whats the users with the 5.2 and 5.9L what say you?

That kind of oil consumption usually means you have a bad plenum gasket. Pull the intake, clean and replace with this instead of another stocker gasket:

Hughes Replacement

or

APS Replacement

Move up to the M1 and you won't need to worry about the plenum again.

Just for "ha-ha's", I would perform a compression test. You can pick up a test kit from Advance Auto for around $30.

1) Blow the engine with compressed air around the spark plugs so that no dirt or rust can fall in when you remove a plug.

2) Unplug the coil.

3) Remove plug, install test lead.

4) Turn the engine over once, check the pressure. Should build to 100-120 PSI on the first compression stroke. Sometimes it may take 1-3 revolutions to hit 100-120PSI.

5) Perform the same test for all plugs, compair the pressure. You should maintain at least 30% with all plugs.

Haynes manuel outlines this test in much better detail, it also instructs you how to determine what is the problem if you encounter a lower pressure.

Your problem sounds like it's a valve train issue, when your engine was rebuilt they re-used the heads and kept the same valves. It is time for a valve job or new heads. Compression test will tell you the condition of your engine.

My D uses 1.5 quarts per 3000 miles... I am going to say mine is due to the rear main and valve covers leaking...

Excessive oil usage is classic plenum gasket territory on Durango 5.9s. Keep in mind we are specifically diagnosing a D... not general areas related to all vehicles.

Take off the air hat, look down the TB with a flashlight. Is there oil? If so... plenum and you have found your leak. Valves and heads would result in easy to observe smoke evidence on that quantity of oil loss.

LOL Neo on the leaking. That'll do it!

Right but I don't see it. Plugs are in GREAT shape....... I'll look at it when it cools off.

Manifold looks great. Just a blow bey and nothing pooling...... It's just gotta be a tight motor.

You looked down into the manifold through the TB?

Intake Manifold may be a common problem in 5.9/5.2, but the oil that may leak into the intake would go to the same place and result in the same burn off that should be present in the exhaust...

I would perform the compression test, it will tell you what condition your engine is in and help eliminate the guessing game.
