Hi all,

I own a Dodge Durango 2002. Because of my work I am using the vehicle in Africa which there is no services. I just got my radiator fixed and only coolant I can find locally is eurol G12+. My engine coolant reservoir empty and I have only water in the radiator itself. Can I use the g12+ or any other coolant it is not HOAT....?

If I can, how can I drain the water from the radiator and how much water shall I add to coolant? Temperature where I am is always high 90's.
Any advice I will appreciate it

I wouldn't use it.

Water is actually superior to antifreeze coolant on a hot system so no harm or fouls there.

Just go find standard, typical, everyday yellow coolant from anywhere and that would be fine mixed 50/50 to water (distilled water if possible)

And we need to know what engine you got first?

Second I'm not sure on the coolant. Stay away for Long Life though.

 

Antifreeze up's the boiling point of the water so the the motor doesn't boil over and over heat. I don't understand how it could be "superior".

After the pitch for Water Wetter, you get the science behind water vs. glycol to dissipate heat.

The value of antifreeze is no-freezing (duh) and the anti-corrosion properties it provides. It doesn't increase coolants ability to dissipate heat... makes it worse. Higher boil points = Yes. Better heat transfer = No. A good/proper system with a good pressure cap, etc would operate just fine with water only (distilled.)

Thank you so much for all the replies. I have 4.7 engine. So just using distilled water should be okay instead of coolant?

I am very ignorant when it comes to cars. But I am learning a lot, since there aren't good mechanics here in Liberia. ( West Africa ) By the way I think I have the only DODGE Durango in this country

 

Short term... yes. However, the advantages (anti corrosion) are worth running a 50/50 mix sooner rather than later.

Also note, if you are low on coolant the 4.7l needs 'burped' or even when it is full it may still run in a hot/overheating condition. That motor has a hard time passing trapped air, thus it gets hot. Burp it via the designated valve and all is well.

Over at the Durango Owners Club, we have a few countries with folks like that. They are either the only on one or one of very few. (Kiev, Estonia, UAE, etc.) Kool!

Thanks for the tips. One last question, what color coolants shall I go with. You mentioned yellow earlier , are there other kinds I can use? It is hard to find right stuff here
