doesn't even come close to what I need period! And the OEM raidator is making it even harder. Radiator is about 23"X23".

Questions is:

What CFM is this thing pulling at 2000 rpm?
What would be a corresponding E-fan?

 

First off, sorry for invading the 1st gen Durango forums with my random fan knowledge...lol.

Secondly, did airflow testing on the front of my 5.9 01 Ram and found under 1000 cfm at idle. When you use fan laws to calculate 2000 RPM, it comes out to about 2,000. I later found published data to verify that.

I tried contacting different auto manufacturers, what you find out quick is no one seems to have data on what factory fans move. I did look up your truck in the catalog I have found for airflows, and your truck factory is rated at 2100 cfm. Don't run out and buy a 2,000 cfm rated fan, because as I've said elsewhere, they are lying about that performance.

With your mods and towing I would look for more then that anyway.

Here's the chart. Look up your year Durango, then look at the column recomendation for their fans. (2 3690's). Then look at the pic of the 3690's, and the column 2 of cfm requirements. The 2nd column lists the aprox. airflow of the fan against the radiator. One of the few manufacturers to list that data. Flex-o-lite, for example, only advertises fans at '0' s.p., which is useless.

 

I've spent over 1/2 an hour looking for something better than that and can't find anything. The fan mounting surface is 21-1/2" x 17-1/2" which is just about perfect to fit my radiator. If I didn't have a factory electric fan I would buy a Black Magic Extreme tomorrow.

Why are you so sure it "doesn't even come close" to what you need?

I was originally going to buy the controller from them http://www.dccontrol.com/0820.htm but then found the Flexalite VSC. The VSC was cheaper and did everything I needed.

 

Just spent time looking at the dccontorl site, haven't seen them before, but noticed they are using the same bloated statistics as everyone else for cfm that are false. Will say this, in the industry, we use a 'fan curve' to plot cfm performance vs s.p., and noticed the amp/cfm chart is done in the exact same manor as a fan curve. Wondering if this is intentional, because I can tell you this, in 8 years, I've never seen a amp/cfm chart. It's useless.

 

I thought the Black Magic was the best but this one looks better.

DC Controls are very popular for folks that want controllers that work well. Plus their delta probe is a better design than standard probes. They were on my short list of choices.

Problem is... and they self admit it... they take a long time to fill orders. Most of the controllers are made in there shop only after ordered. I didn't have the patience or time to wait once I got ready to move ahead.

Interestingly... does DCs 16" fan look familiar to anyone? How about their 18"? The 16" should... it's on my Durango! "Their" 16" is the Taurus and "Their" 18" is the Mark VIII via identical aftermarket replacements.

The BM-X-180 will meet your needs. Ive got over a year on mine, towing a full load in hilly regions, slow moving grid block, slow moving high rpm trail riding, pretty much all crappy situations... It'll do the work... Cant get you the specs though

Now think about this...... To have a OEM fan (clutch engaged) moving at 2450 RPM with a 20 inch, 20 degree, 9 blade fan with a 22 inch ID shroud opening and don't forget the fan is fixed meaning no flex keeping it's riggedness and fits perfect in the shroud.

Now put that against a 15", 2450 RPM, 8 blade fan that doesn't fit FULLY across the radiator at only 21 1/2" x 17 1/2" and my radiator is a 28' X 28"?????? This doesn't add up!

The CFM on the OEM will take that fan out any day of the week. This is why their installed from the factory with a clutch fan over a E-fan. I want to check out some that are a little bigger. Check this site out. The 21 inch.
