Help Please... Turns over but won't start
I have a 2001 5.9 Durango RT 4x4 that has not been very dependable to start lately.
Sometimes it starts and runs fine. Sometime I have to wiggle the cables and tap the battery posts and then it starts fine. But, when I turn it off it may or may not start again... It turns over like it's about to start but nothing. Sometimes when it FINALLY does start it sputters roughly and sounds like it's misfiring?? Then won't go unless you keep the gas down?? Then one time we just left it and came back an hour or two later and it started right up with no messing with it.
Well now it won't start at all. We switched out the battery last fall with a major tuneup (cap, rotor, wires, plugs and pcv valve.) Now we have checked all the connections replaced the terminals and the battery registers fine and actually turns over fine, just does not start. Well, it started right up after the connections were replaced with gold plated clampers and then we drove it around brought it home and it won't start again!
Anything anyone can suggest would be helpful.

Could be a bad alternator. Take if off and have someone like Auto Zone check it for you.
Could be a bad wire burned inside the conduit. You might want to replace both the battery wires and have the battery load tested. This sounds like electrical and the battery/connections are the culporite.
What name brand parts did you use for the tune up? (cap, rotor, wires, and plugs)
Also could be a fuel pump so do a fuel pressure test.

So far so good on replacing the Camshaft position sensor ($44 Duralast/Pick-Up Coil Part Number: CR150 at Auto Zone.)
It's driving and starting fine now.
We also replaced the rotor as he said it looked a little fried??
So now I am off to change the oil which is due too.
Do I have to disconnect the battery for the codes to disappear?
THANKS!

If the computer registers the code as a hard code then you have to have a scanner to reset it. If it is not a hard code or has not been registered as a hard code you can disconnect the battery and it will turn off the light.
So there are three ways but only 2 will reset a hard code (1, and 2 here)
1. OBD scanner
2. After so many restarts once the computer no longer senses a problem. (that number of restarts varies, so am not able to tell you the exact number)
3. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes (only works if it is not a hard code)

Well it is running and starting fine now, so fingers are crossed...
I just turned the key on and off three times and it cleared the codes. It listed the first one and then went ----------- and then said complete or whatever it says and the check engine light was not there when I started right after that. So that worked. It was on when I started it a few seconds before clearing the codes.
I am just hoping this covers it. If not I will deal with what comes then.
Thanks ya'll and Kev2 "your getting an oil sender? " what does this mean??
