46RE shifting problems Park to Reverse lock up
We have a Durango 5.9 with a 46RE (2002, 118k miles), today the transmission locked up, shifted from P to R tipped the gas pedal, car moved and locked up all of the sudden after just 10ft. It took awhile that the transmission unlocked & I was able to move it back to N / P. Car is doing the same from P to D....
No error code reading, no noise, the yellow engine light is on, after restarting the yellow light is off. Transmission oil level is at the right level... Hope some one here in the forum can help.
Thanks Thomas

Welcome to the forum...
You need to pull the code..
Turn the key to ON (not start), OFF, ON, OFF, ON and leave it there. If you look in the odometer window the codes will flash any code(s) with a small delay between each result. Each code should be in a P#### format, and will say PDONE when completed.
Post that code here and we will go from there.

If you have a broken hard part, Like the sun gear or planetry gear, you will not get DTC or transmission code. What you can do to isolate the problem is remove the drive and make sure the rear diff isn't causing your lock up problem. On a flat ground and have someone on the brakes when pushing. If the truck rolls fine, then the problem has to be in the transmission.

If Thomas or anyone else has solved the above problem since the last post the details would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2003 Durango 4x4 that does the exact same thing in reverse. It is a periodic problem during cold starts. After about 10-15 minutes of driving the problem disappears. I've managed up to this point by backing in everywhere when the vehicle is warm. The diff and tranny fluids seem to be fine. Thanks all!

Update: I ended up taking the vehicle into a trustworthy mechanic. The problem had nothing to do with the drive train. The problem was the rear e-brake shoes. The pads were "disbonded" ...causing them to bind in their housing therefore locking up the rear wheels in reverse... sooo for $350 problem solved. The problem was likely caused by driving with the e-brake engaged...ooops Hope this helps someone someday...nothing beats a good forum.
