There are many articles about acetone as a fuel additive. Recommended amount is never more than 2 oz./10 gals of gas. Diluted to that extent will not eat up plastic or rubber. I have let it set undiluted on both materials and it didn't eat it up. Cheap plastic like they use on some kids toys? - maybe. What acetone does is break down the adheasion of the gas molecules so that they can vaporize better, thereby burn more efficiently. This has nothing to do with octane, which slows the fuel burn to accomodate higher compression. I have used acetone several times with marginal results. It gives the best return when hauling my camper through the mountains. Around town - not much difference. When I use it I dilute it with gas before putting it in the tank. That way it is mixed better and less apt to harm the paint if a little is spilled.

Q: I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma. Is it true that I can increase my gas mileage by adding 4-5 oz. of acetone per 16 gallons of gas? If so, are there any risks of damage to the engine? KEVIN

A: No, it's not true. Yes, you can damage the engine.
