Default 2002 Durango Question

I have seen where many people are saying that their Durango's with the 4.7 engine have a 4 speed or 5 speed automatic. What transmission do they really have for this year? I know that a 4 speed is standard for the 5.9. Any answer to this question would greatly be appreciated.

The 4.7L has a 45RFE transmission. The 45RFE is a 5 speed transmission. The 3.9L, 5.2L and 5.9L included the 46RE, 42RE and 44RE and all are a 4 speed transmissions.

The 4.7L is the only one that has a 5 speed trans.

Here is some great info on transmission gearing:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TorqueFlite

3 speed with overdrive is standard on the 5.9s

4 speed (operationally) is standard on the 4.7s

Swap the TCM and you can get the 5th gear because it is already in the unit, just not activated on the Durango since the 4.7s mated transmission is all electronically controlled. Interstingly, it is the same transmission on the Jeep and it's a 5 speed.

Here is a thread on the DOC from FastMan on the 00-02 4.7 Transmission 4 Speed to 5 Speed Conversion:

I cannot get to that link you posted Indy and why would one have to swap out the TCM to activate the 5th gear when it should already be set up that way from the factory? I read that I would have to get one from a 2002 Jeep and then it would activate the 5th gear on the transmission and am wondering if it would be worthwhile in the mpg department to do that for highway speeds. Anyone notice any mpg change when doing this and if so, what kind of mpg did you get on the highway?

Link works fine. Try again. From there, there are folks who have done the swap and have those milage answers. I'm sorry I can't answer myself here... I have a different transmission and don't have the 5th gear option personally. I just happen to know where the details were available online. You can also call the Dan the FastMan if you still have link issues. He can answer your questions.

That trans is electroniclly controled and if it doesn't get the signal it wont shift correctly.
