Default Noise from Rear Differential

Hi,

the D has started to develop a "rumbling" noise from the rear - I think its the differential...
dealer here says best can be done is to put an "additive" in the oil & hope, since other alternative is to rebuild and the cost will be prohibitive.

it is true that the gear & pinion run to over $600...but personally I think this additive alternative is complete bull...but I'll see how it sounds when I get it back...

so off to the scrap yard to get myself a rear axle assembly...now I've got a 1999 5.9l 2WD and according to Dodge parts there are two ratio's 3.92 & 3.55. Dealer says I've got 3.55...

How do I know which is which on the wreck - there are plenty of D's with differentials, but all are from 4WD D's of varying vintage.

What & where is the identifying code I should be looking for...??

Never thought when I bought the D some 4 years ago that I'd become an expert on so many aspects of D maintenance...

The additive must be added if you have anti-slip. No options, no bullshiit. With that said, it will do nothing if the gear is going out.

Diffs should be serviced every 24 months with the trans, otherwise, failure.

yes, I've read about this in the Haynes manual - add a friction modifier for limited slip differentials
where does it tell me about whether I have one...??

You could check your build sheet data.

You could look at the window sticker.

You can look through the open glovebox at the inside of the firewall and check the data there.

You could look at the left end of the rear axle tube right behind the backing plate. If you have the limited slip there'll be a light colored stripe painted around the tube and an indication in print that you have limited slip.

You could service the diff and not put in the little bottle of $9 friction modifier and then try to drive around in a circle. When the rear end feels and sounds like it wants to come apart, you will know you have limited slip.

LS was limited to 392's I thought and judging from your 5.9L I would say the dealer is wrong. Get behind the diff cover and there should be a little tag attached to one of the cover bolts that will have 3.9 or 3.5 on it and there is the answer to you question. (usually on the upper left hand side bolt)

You can get that without the additive. Go buy it from the dealer for about $10 and put it in. I had a friend that did that in a Ford that ended up installing 2 bottles of it and it worked like a charm.......Good luck!
