Looks like I just found my next distributor. Don't quite know which one to go with.

MSD #8228 is a blaster coil dude! The OEM you linked to in your statment is actually a performance coil and is over OEM in specifications but not by much.

The real crappy one is the Blaster II coil....... That one causes hell on the system! Don't buy that one!

Disturbed,

You want this one:

NOT one of these:

Some use the later, but they are not friendly to our PCMs over time.

---------

HS,

Most people recognize the early as an OEM replacement and call the canisters above as "Blasters." I believe MSD themselves didn't use to call the OEM replacement coils as Blasters but added that name to their OEM replacement line to gain the 'value' the Blaster name has earned them in the HotRod circles.

With that said, technically MSD calls both Blasters so you are correct. Common acceptance aside.

Indy<----- They named the MSD coil 8228 as "Blaster" so as not to be confused with the older version I see your point. To date I don't know anyone using the pre 1993 tube coil that you reffered above. Everyone should be using the MSD #8228 for 1994 to 1999 5.9L and 5.2L. The 2000 - 2003 have been documented problems using the MSD #8228 and therefore I do not like them because of drone the backfeed into the PCM. The PCM changed in 2000 and up and is NOT the same as 1998 - 1999 Durango's. Thus, they shouldn't be used.

This coil is rated for the 1998 - 1999 5.2L and 5.9L but not the 2000 -2003 years.

It is also rated at 40,000 volts and is true to that. Couple this together with these part numbers and you got it. Part Numbers for 5.9 Performance Ignition

Accel has one that can be used on all the years and here is the link. It's rated at 42,000 volts:

http://www.accel-ignition.com/Produc...ame=All+Brands

Now even this one says up to 1997 but It also states this:
Compatible with MOPAR J-TEC computer controlled ignitions
It sounds like it is the same to me though........... Besides didn't MSD buy Accel?....

Actualy that Accel you just posted states works up to 1997 Magnum's according to the posted description.

and this is why I have been so unsure as to what to get there has been no straight forward descriptions for the 2000 5.9 descriptions

MSD 8.5mm Wires #32189
Accel Distributor Cap #120329
Accel Distributor Rotor #130328
Accel OEM Adapter to Coil #140021AH

HS,

When you see the failed PCMs with MSD gear, watch... it will be the blaster IIs not the oem coil replacements.

The Accel is HOTTER than the MSD with more current. If one were to fail over the other... which do you think it would be? Of the two, as I stated, go with the MSD oem replacement or a Napa Echlin. You are gaining much/any either way over a simple stocker.

True but your talking about only 2,000 volts Indy not to mention I think both companies are owned by MSD. Neither of them are rated to the engines period. I LOVE MSD but I have seen problems with the OEM replacement (Blaster) and many problems with the Blaster II's. This problem has had both coils causing the break down in the 2000 - 2003.

Just saying I've seen it.

Disturbed<----- They are manufactures numbers.

Here are the Summit part numbers and links.

2 Coils to choose from. I like MSD but each to their own.
