AT tires on a R/T?
Hey all -
Is it stupid to put all terrain tires on a 5.9 R/T Durango? I know that the R/T is more geared towards street use and the fact that it comes with 17 in rims and street tires suggests that it should not really be off road too much, but it is a 4x4 and it was written up in offroad magazines as a decent offroader. Not thinking straight mud tires, rather a mostly streetable tire that would also be decent for light offroad duty. Similar to the BFG T/A KO.
Thoughts?

nice that is what I wanted to hear. Anyone have recommendations on brands? Apparently BFG doesn't make anything in that size. I noticed a few guys on here with SLTs use the Cooper Discoverers. Is there a tire review thread somewhere?
The toyo's look great as well as Goodyear AT/S and I LOVE the MT/R.

Those Goodyear MT/Rs are sweet. Pretty pricey though, but I am sure they are worth it. Question. I noticed there are a few more choices in the 275/70 R17 size than there are in the 275/60 R17 at least for AT tires. Most tires available for the 60 sidewall are All seasons and high performance road tires as some of you mentioned may be the case with this wheel size.
Would going from a 60 to a 70 sidewall have any negative impacts on use, such as speedo misreads, rubbing wheelwells, excessive wear to the drivetrain, reduced mpgs etc? I would expect a little impact with the aggressive tread pattern, but don't want to sacrifice the truck in any way.
If that is the case, does it make sense to stick to factory specs 275/60? If so my options it seems really are limited to the Yokohama Geolanders and Sumitomos and possibly one or two others. Japanese tires on a Dodge may look a little silly I guess...but the price is right!
The 275/70 R17 is a 32.2 inch tire so it won't fit because it's too tall without a T/S lift. Heres a conversion chart. You need to stay below 31 inch in height and 10.5 width. Remember, you also need to change the spare tire just in case you get a flat because you can't run different sized tires as a spare tire. They always have to remain the same! You can however buy a old tire just for a spare.

You can do other choices so don't limit yourself. Your are correct as changing sized tires will affect your speedometer. You can change the input by using a PCM tuner like:

Remember that the Goodyear MT/R is a mud tire not a all terrain tire so they will ware out quicker because they are softer. But they look SWEET!

what do you all think of this deal? The Yokos are not as aggressive as I was thinking but seems to get good ratings according to consumer reports. I live in a metro area so won't be doing much mudding. Mostly light gravel and parks, etc. when not using for highway driving so could be a good compromise. Best part is they come in stock size so wouldnt have to do any lift kits or chips. Although may get a superchips in a few months. Those things are pretty awesome.

I think the 275/70/17 should fit. The R/T's has a pretty good height over the OEM 275/60/17 tires so I think it should clear. The 70's are taller but not much that it will not clear the fender wells.
the BFG Longtrail Touring TA's are great alternatives to most tires. This is what my R/T is currently wearing after my Comp T/A's wore out. They aren't expensive, have very long tread life. These touring TA's is like a All terrain tire for highway use. Very comfortable and quiet tire so far. Great on wet surfaces.
The All Terrain K/O's has this size that will fit your R/T if you want all terrain from tirerack. They have sizes up to 315 in width but you may need to check for clearance if you want to go beyond 275.
