Could be a warn tappet, rocker, lifter, cam, or the rocker needs to be adjusted. Can't remember if there is an adjustment on the 4.7L?

I pulled the motor. The more I thought about it, I am just going to freshen it up, re-build the heads and give it a re-ring, some new lifters etc and re-assemble. I wont have any question then about what I have under the hood. Sometimes its the easiest and cheapest route. Who has an economical re-ring kit for this thing? Many times in the past I have used fastengineparts.com or naparts.com or flatlanderracing.com but they only seem to stock the old school stuff. I have to admit, this is an interesting design, compared to the old Buicks I am used to tearing into. Fascinated me to pull a plastic intake off of it with one hand, when I am used to 80lb cast iron models.... :-)

Thanks,
Jon

Make sure you hone the cylinders first.

As for a OEM re-ring set, what about www.rockauto.com or even NAPA?

Ya i would just do a slight hone, and do new rings. Prob should go ahead and replace bearings also.

Yes, I will get the appropriate cross hatch in the cylinders and re-ring it. The re-ring kit should contain mains, rods, rings and gaskets. I did find NAPARTS.com has the kit for $574 and the lifters for $75. Doesn't sound too hateful. I forgot about rockauto, I will have to give them a call. I generally replace the oil pump when doing this, but this thing is pricey. What the life expectancy on that thing?

The plastic intake did make me laugh a bit..... I should have the motor broke down this afternoon and off to the machine shop by Monday.

Thanks,
Jon

A long life if you build it and take care of it. I've seen them last over 200k. Make sure you install some real HD head gaskets. This is the weak point of the 4.7L. I like the Mopar Performance Composition Head Gaskets or Fel-Pro PermaTorque head gaskets: http://www.federalmogul.com/en/After...s/Permatorque/

Ok, so the engien is tore down. Looks like my timing is off, I have a burnt valve and a collapsed lifter. Glad I pulled it out. What is strange is I have zero sludge in this motor.... The bottom end is perfect, and no crap in the pan. I did find a real good price on a master rebuild kit on ebay. Includes the chains, oil pump, pistons etc for $650. I will invest in better head gaskets and some lifters, but you can beat the price.

Why is that strange? Sludge in Dodge engines is 95% rumor and 5% VERY bad maintenance. Any routine oil changes and proper service keeps a modern engine clean.
