If you look at my trans am, you would think it was stock. Of course overlooking the drag radials. That is until I crank it up, I have a nice size cam and it usually rattles the ground when its started lol.

I like the OEM look without all the bull**** to make it look like it's more than what it is. The best builds are those that do it all and take pride in doing it!

Thats so refreshing to hear. I always make my cars as stock as I can, back to factory original. It usually impresses people more because they see it as a "time capsule". I just think stock looks better in most cases. Now the drivetrain is a different story. :-)

Hey Hydra, I tried downlaoding that service manual, but the documents inside require a password? Basically trying to get a torque spec listing for the rebuild. bjamick gave soem of the listings below, but many are missing (like the main cap specs). Does anyone have a scan of the torque specs for the 4.7 litre motor?

Thanks,
Jon

  • Tighten bolts A - L to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) .
  • Tighten bolts 1 - 10 to 2.8 Nm (25 in. lbs.) .
  • Turn bolts 1 - 10 an additional 90 ° .

Anything else?

Thanks guys, you have both been of great help! By the way, my ebay kit showed up yesterday, and the quality is very nice. I expected junk for $550 Master Rebuild, but it was really nice, excluding the head gaskets. Mizumoauto was the seller. It included the full gasket set, main bearings, rod bearings, oil pump, timing chain and all guides and tensioners.

Sweet!

You want to use the very best head gaskets anyway. Take pictures!

I will! I picked up a set of FelPro Permatorqu gaskets for it yesterday. I was also surprised when I was informed the the rod bolts are a dealer only item. I expected to get robbed at the dealer, but they were $43 for the set. Thats awesome! Got the crank in the block last night, pistons this evening, and should have the heads and timing on by Monday. After looking closely at the timing in the Haynes manual (I finally broke down and bought it), it looks very simple, with the marks on the chains.

Fired it up last night and it runs great! I used a home made oil accumulator to prime the motor. I had oil pressure within 1 second upon initial fire up. I used a 2" piece of PVC pipe capped at both ends (one removable) and fitted it with an air line at one end and a hose barb at the other. I fitted the hose barb to some fuel line and the fuel line to a brass fitting into the oil sending unit, filled the tube with oil, capped it, and put 20lbs air into the tube and forced the oil through the block until I saw it coming out of the heads. Cost me like $10 to build. Thanks everybody for the help. This was a fun build, and timing hte motor was a breeze. Everyone had me intimidated by it, but it was a cake walk. I highly recommend that build kit from Muzimo Auto on ebay. I found out that they put the 4.7L in some Jeeps in 99, that is why they say the kit is for 99-03.

Thanks,
Jon
