Default Need help. Electrical problem '02 Durango.

Just as it went out of warranty, my Mom's durango has decided to act up.

Problems:

Pass side headlight does not light up. I tested the socket and receive ~4.2 volts for the low beam and ~4.2 volts for the high beam. Not enough voltage to light the bulb. Other one works fine.

Also, doors do not lock any more. THis happened at same time. When you hit the remote, the driver's door WILL lock and the horn will beep, but that's it. None of the other doors will lock nor will ANY door unlock. I can hear the mechanism in the driver's door cycle when i hit the button, but like i said, only the drivers door locks, nothing else and ZERO unlock function.

I checked all the fuses, no luck. Quick visual at the wiring and everything looks ok under the hood and under the dash.

The truck does have an aftermarket remote start on it, but it works and is not tied into any other function. It just flashes the parking lights.

Now, i am very mechanically inclined but have all my expeirence in Ford Mustangs. I can put one together with my eyes closed. I do not however have any wiring diagrams for a Durango so i have no idea where to begin looking in the harness or what color wires correspond to what function so i can test for voltage.

Can anyone here give me a hand? Maybe some wiring diagrams or other things to check? I'll most likely be using this weekend to try to fix the problem.

Thanks

Mike

My '01 Ram 1500 starting doing some really strange things also when it was just over 3 years old. Things would fail periodically (like the freak'n gas guage) and every now and then it wouldn't start, like it was flooded, and I'd have to let it sit for 10-15 minutes before it would start. I took it in to Dodge and they said it was the battery. It was failing when it got hot and the low voltage would cause the computer system to go haywire. I'm not sure if it was just a story, but a new battery and a service charge made it good as new.

Good luck.

But would a bad battery also cause the pass headlight high and low beams to completely not work? Like i said before, i only get 4.2 volts when i test the socket.

I'm puzzled.

My 02 Durango just did it this week.

The alarm started going crazy. Then while driving the wiper blades when on by themselves both in the front and rear. Then the door locks would not work when I pressed the button either on the Key Fob or the arm rest.
Lights did not work either. But if I pressed the brake those lights did come on.

I checked all the fuses and everything looked fine. I disconected the battery for about 10 minutes and reconected it. Now all is back to normal.

The battery problem that someone mentioned could be the problem. My D just sat in my garage for about a month without being driven and when I got to it the battery was almos dead.

That could have caused the computer to go crazy and now disconnecting it could have reseted it.

I'll keep an eye out to see if the problem comes back.

My friend had the same problem with his D. He thought it was the battery as well. Wrong. It was the central timing module. The computer that controls damn near everything. It was about $400 and he hasn't had a problem since.

Well, the problem came back on my D. After seeing the post from "last of teh R/Ts" about the CTM I called my local dealership. The new CTM costed me $140.00 plus tax. It was very simple to replace and now it is all working perfect again.

Just as a side note, the CTM on the 02 SLT+ with the Infinity option is on the driver's side not the passenger side next to the right kick plate.

The only draw back is that once you replace the CTM, you cannot run through the Key Fob programming steps on the owners manual as the new unit does not recognize any thing.

I had to take it to the dealer and have them program the key fobs with the DRBIII. They charged me for 1/2 hour labor. $40.00

Now it really works perfect.

Good luck.

since this topic was so long ago, i don't know if it will help but i think i figured out the passenger headlight problem. It seemed to be part of a recall explained here:
