OK... Putting us back on topic..... I just did it again!! Just picked up a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo for the wife the other day. It needs a new Transfer Case thats all. Take a guess what I got it for? Oh yeah... Here are some pics of it on the trailer with the D pulling it home.

If you backed it on the trailer the main weight (engine) would be on the rear, if you could tie it down? I have air bags on my rig to keep the rear up so it don't drop the rear end and it also aids in handling.

I also use a EQ hitch but only for my trailer.

+1. Turn that Jeep around.

You should never tow with the *** end of the tow vehicle down AND the nose end of the trailer ALSO down. Dangerous condition for anything other than in-town drivearounds.

Even then, you have no emergency braking power with the front wheels up like that.

Air bags might lift the rear up some but that still doesn't fix loading the tongue too much which is what causes the nose of the tow vehicle to be pointing up.

I fixed my Durango up to be able to tow 7,000 - 8,000 lbs daily. New tranny, shift kit, 4.56:1 gears, added leaf springs in rear, new tires, hawk superduty brake pads, bilstien shocks, prodigy brake controller. It tows it quite well or at least I thought it did until I got my Ford Excursion. The difference is night and day.

It wasn't just the power either. The Excursion has plenty with the 6.8L V10 but the 360 Durango with the 4.56:1 gears is no slouch.

The 8,000 # trailer still wags the Durango pretty good over bumps and stuff where the Excursion is rock solid and 8,000 lbs feels like barely anything back there.

The Durango at its best is still a half ton vehicle and a fairly small one at that.

Here's a picture of the Durango pulling my stump grinder and a few others of some things I've pulled with the Excursion. I know this isn't an Excursion forum but this is a towing thread and already way off topic anyways.

Plus, with the Excursion, I get to take all my toys, er I mean tools, with me:

Oh, and Hydra, I did get the Roadmaster Active Suspension and love it. Does work just as good as airbags and I don't ever have to mess with it no matter what weight load I am towing.

you got some nice toys in the back there, we are slowly converting our toolshed to all stihl powertools also, very good quality tools, our oldest saw is an old stihl 011 from 1989 , still running strong, and we abuse the hell out of it,

Gr8, I agree.

I don't think this guy is an everyday hauler like you are.

Also in respect to the D vs Exc compare... remember we are comparing two different classes. We would need an SUV based on the RAM to compare to the Excursion based on the F-150. Neither are direct compares to the Durango. Different class, different vehicle, different expectations, different results.

With that said, I LOVE YOUR D MODs!

Well, I dont haul very much, but I do know that you want the wheels on the ground and not up in the air like that. When we went to go get the vehicle the guy I bought it from tried to pull it from the Tie Rod Adjusting bar and snaped it in half. So there was no control of the wheels plus the vehicle did not drive. So that was the only way that we were able to get the Jeep up on the trailer. There was no place to tie it down to on the back end of the trailer. But I got it home and the D is still running strong.

Actually, it's not based on the f-150. The Excursion has the same underpinnings as a F-350 single rear wheel so it's really a 1 ton SUV. Same frame, same axles, same brakes, etc. It's the same size wheelbase as a regular cab, long bed F-350. VERY heavy duty vehicle.

I know it's not the same as the Durango. That was kind of my point. The Durango maxes out around 7k to 8k lbs (for daily use.) and that is only after it has been beefed up pretty well.
