Default Rear End Questions

So I have been letting the Durango sit for awhile now (Got a new 300C Hemi to drive, man I love that car). Now I need the Durango back up and running, my local wrecker has a glut of Durangos in and said they will sell me an open diff 9.25 complete rear end with 50k on it for $200.00. Sounds like a steal to me. Would be easy to swap the rear end I assume, any issues I might have with this? I am not sure if the newer rear end has ABS or not but if not I can swap on mine right (Assuming I have rear ABS). What parts might I need? Rear U joint, spring pad rubber (assuming I don't get the springs) any things else?

Thanks guys!
Bill

OK after looking again I see that the ABS exciter ring is pressed onto the ring gear and is no easy swap. If I get a non-ABS rear will I be able to put it in and just not hook up the ABS or will this cause problems for the brake system.

Thanks

All of the carriers from the 1998-2003 are going to be a direct bolt in I think. All D's have an exciter ring and pickup sensor so don't worry about that, although I try to stay with the same year just to make sure. You will have to ensure that you get the correct matching gear ratio to match the front. What you can look for if you don't have the tag on the rear end is the gear ratio is stamped on the ring gear like here is my 392 (look at the middle number):

It would be best to find a LS rear end but for $200 open can do. Do a total swap then you wouldn't need to set backlash or anything.

Ya sounds like a no brainer, I already have an open anyway. I will check the sticker in the glove box for the ratio. I remember it not being the steeper gears (392), it was 370 or 355s or something. I will double check though. Thanks for the info Rustin

well its 3.55, 3.92 or (i think 4.10s on the R/T????? not 100% on that) and all durangos and dakotas 97-03 have rear wheel abs at a bare minimum, so dont worry about that part

No 4:10 on the R/T factory. The only gearing available was the 3:55 (standard) and an optional 3:92.

Gonna swap out the rear end on Monday, the junk yard that has the rear end is not open on weekends (crazy huh?) but I have Monday off so I can run over and get it and do the swap in one day. Gonna see if they will take my old one so I don't have it laying around. Not worth the space to store it for me.
