Lagging after fill up... gas cap?
Frankly I'm a tank-half-full kinda guy..
Meaning, I don't fill my 99, 360ci 4x4 completely full very often but I did today. I had driven about 45 miles today with no trouble when I stopped and filled up. I had barley pulled away from the pump when the [check engine] light came on and my Dingo began to lag slightly on take-off. It shifts well and runs fine once it's up to speed.
I know that 'bad gas' is an obvious suspect but it doesn't seem like that to me. I have a feeling it might be the gas cap. I'm not a mechanic but If I recall correctly the fuel system of a fuel injected motor needs a certain amount of pressure (vacuum?) in the tank, and the cap helps regulate that?
After another 45 miles the lag had almost gone away but the [ce] light is still on. I opened the gas cap and nothing happened. Shouldn't there be a rush of air as the pressure equalizes?
Whatchathink?

Did you pull the code to see what it is? You can do the key to on three times to get the code. Coulld also be some water in the gas lines due to condensation because you like to keep the tank half full.
2000 and newer Durangos have a built-in system that can display check engine light (CEL) codes without the use of a scanner. 1999 and earlier Durangos must be read with a OBD-ll scanner.

99's (such as mine) are not tempermental with the gas caps, now if the problem occured and you pulled the cap and received the "whoosh" of air i'd blame the cap. Next time it happens give it a try. Tank half full isnt a bad thing, our screens suck/filter directly off the bottom of the tank anyways. Get the code, maybe toss in some water treatment, and lets see what we can do.
Problem solved, I wasn't even close.
This is a case of pure coincidence leading me down the wrong path. The lag began immediately after fill up.
Auto Zone pulled the code for me. It indicated a transmission problem so off I went to the transmission shop. After a little more investigation the tranny guy replaced a valve and a sensor (I forget exactly what he called them) and now all is well.
Thanks to all for the help.
