Yeah, I am getting older, but wiser too! If I play my cards in life right, I like to retire at 50! Already have only a few years left on the home mortage and then I am completely debt free and have mula to get me a nice toy to ride in! Now some history of my loyalty with Chrysler.
I started out driving a 76 buick lesabre tank back when I was 15. Yip, back then you can get a provisional hardship license at 15 years. at 16, I traded up for a 81 ford pinto wagon! my first stick shift! damn, alot of good memories playing around in that 2 door wagon in high school. At 18 after graduation, I got my first brand new car. 1985 Dodge Shelby charger! took me 3 years to pay it off (10k back in 85). Today, I own a used Durango R/T. Dunno what I will be driving in the future. I am hoping for my 2011 Challenger SRT if and when they come out with the 6.4 engine.
I hope this Durango will last 20 years. I nearly held on to my 1985 Dodge Shelby charger. But on year 2000, the Original tranny broke (housing) and cannot be repaired which broke my being able to hold onto it for so long. That car had alot of memories. First of all, it was a LEMON straight out of the dealer lot! too bad, no texas lemon laws that I was aware of then. I had service receipts that were bigger than a NY phone book. But after its 5/50 warranty ran out, the problems slowly went away. But most of all, alot of incompetent people from various dealers worked on it that caused alot of mechanical breakdowns. When I sold my car in 2000 a few months before I got my Durango, this Shelby charger was nearly fully restored. I spent over $1700 for a premium paint job and took me over a year to find all the original oem decals that came with the car! All mechanically parts were replaced or rebuilt. Then the tranny broke which broke my spirit after all this effort. When I sold the car for much less than what I put into it, I sold it to a collector instead of some idiot that in hopes will carry on in maintaining it.
I just had my first newborn in 2000 and back then SUV's were the trend. Never thought I would go back to Dodge after my experience with my shelby charger but hell, I blame the people that worked on it more than the design from the manufacturer. I am well aware of the Dakota R/T's. They are so trendy for a sports truck. Then the durango came out. At first, I thought man, that is butt ugly, but later, it started looking good. When I saw the first R/T durango driving down the road, my mind was made up and went hunting for a Durango R/T. In Sept of 2000, all I can find are the 01 R/T's and damn, the sticker on those were quite high, nearly topping 40k for a loaded down R/T with dvd entertainment system.
Looked a little harder and finally found a few 2000 R/T models. Sticker on those were around 25k, nearly half what the 01 would cost. Yes, the 01 had a new interior refresh but overall, outside it is identical except for the 00 model elephant mirrors. I had two possible 2000 R/T's to choose, a cherry red or glossy black. the red only had 8k miles on it, and the black had 21k miles. I seen quite a few red R/T's driving around but not black. So black I chose despite the 21k miles. The original owner may not have done any maintenance on it. The air filter was clogged and still had the mopar name on the filter. I must assume it was the original filter that came with the truck. I had the dealer do all the fluid changes and tune regardless if it need it or not in some areas. I want to start with everything new when I drive that truck out of the lot.
I found this dodgeforum website when I was looking for a durango support group online when I lost my original heater core back in 2003. This place gave me some good insight and I joined the family and been here ever since.
Now the truck is in my garage. It's on its third set of tires. 2nd tranny, 2nd radiator(change it same time as tranny), 2nd set of sensors (tranny, tps, 02, etc), and 3rd heater core. It now sits with just under 95k miles. Not bad for nearly 10 years considering I bought it used at 21k miles. Just don't get out often with you have family nowadays.
Alot of people tells me to get rid of it. Too much to fix when it breaks down, etc..... But they don't realize, I am very sentimental about things I own. I make them last as long as possible. Plus, it's paid off so I don't owe anything! I'll never trade this in for a asian model or even buy a asian vehicle. Don't believe in their immortal reliability either despite all the myths those so called asians believe they can outlast cockroaches. Those asian manufacturers don't make nearly the volume of what the big 3 makes so of course there will be more problems.
Funny thing is today, the asian makers, honda and toyota, they are now posting a helluva lot of recalls and bulletins on alot of their vehicles. This is because they now make as much or more than the big 3. So there, the more vehicles you make, the more problems you can possibly have with them due to sheer volume.
There you go. That's my two cents to share with all of you on my Bday!
