Default 3.92 conversion?

I am currently in Iraq, and I am picking up a 2000 Durango SLT 4.7L from my little sister when I get back in a few weeks, this is a family truck (my dad bought it new in 2000) but unfortunately nobody really knows much about it. My dad had gotten a tow kit installed aftermarket for towing a small camper, but not the factory tow package. From what i've read the factory tow package was a 3.92 axle ratio, transmission cooler, and obviously the hitch and wiring. He said he got an LSD from the factory, is this the 3.92 axle ratio? Or could it have a 3.55 ratio with an LSD? What would it take, if it has the 3.55 ratio, to convert it over to the 3.92?

The reason I am asking, is I am buying this truck to use for towing my race car back and forth to race tracks, so I need the extra towing capacity (I need at least 4000lbs, so I would really like to have the 5650lb towing capacity of the 3.92 axle for added security (I really don't like the idea of being 350lb away from the max capacity).

I would check to see what the rear end is myself, but like I said, I am in Iraq. I am just trying to get my homework done so if it is a 3.55, as soon as I get home I know exactly what parts to find, and replace.

Thank you guys, I hope to hear from you soon.

-Josh

i know that the tow package could come with EITHER the 3.55 or the 3.92 gears (i have the tow package on my truck with 3.55s) but i thought that the tow capacity was more than 4500lbs on the truck, but i dont have a manual in front of me

The 2000 Durango manual states it could have a 8 1/4 Limited Slip diff however I have NEVER seen one. I am sure if it is a Limited Slip then it should be a 392 (Chrysler 9.25) axle. You could have someone get under the truck and look at the little tags on the rear diff cover bolts as there should be 2 different tags. One will have the build date and one will have the gearing.

Hmm, well what I read on these forums, that was the towing capacity for the 3.55

Hmm, well according to my dad (who bought the truck new) he got the LSD option (not sure why) so maybe it is the 3.92 already. The truck is currently with my little sister, and she is mechanically illiterate, she can't tell the difference between the dipstick and a lug nut, hahaha. So I guess i'll have to wait till I get the truck to look.
