Default Please help me choose a Durango

I am getting ready to purchase my first Durango and have narrowed my choices down to two. I am putting the horse before the carriage in that I have not yet driven either.

Both are very similar: price, 80k miles, SLT models, 4x4, etc... However biggest differences are:
1st is an 01 4.7L engine
2nd is a 99 5.9L engine., with a couple minor issues including notorious rear windows not working.

As stated above, both are stock. Power is impoortant to me, however from reviewing this forum I found that several important upgrades have been made post 00. I would also prefer not to replace a transmission, could possibly install small T/S lift one day (maybe) but will not install larger tires as I do not want to sacrifice torque and acceleration. Only performance mods in my future may be air intake and exhaust. I may drive an occassional trail, but will mostly be on pavement.

I guess my question would be is the 5.9L so powerful that it is worth sacrificing more reliable transmission and other upgrades or does the 4.7L offer enough power to accomodate and jsutify purchasing newer model. Judging by the other Dodges I have owned I have to believe the 4.7 is plenty powerful. Please provide your thoughts...

Will be test driving and probably purchasing this week.

Thanks in advance.

As much as it hurts me... me specifically... to say this:

If those are your ONLY two Durangos to choose from... pick the 2001.

Whew!

Now, with that said... those are NOT the only two Ds out there so SKIP THEM BOTH.

If you are buying, spend what you must to get the 2003 R/T. It is the pinnacle of the Gen1 Durango's lineage and will do anything you ever ask of it.

I would look into a 2000 and up 5.9L with good maintenance records.

There is no Gen1 Hemi.

Please disregard Pete... we only let him out after midnight and usually with a shorter leash.

lol as much as it hurts me to say it, i have to agree with indy, a 2003 R/T is your best bet the 4.7 does have PLENTY of power for normal driving and light towing, and will give you the best gas mileage, but if i had to buy a used durango id be looking for a 2003 R/T

I have an 03 R/T, and I freakin LOVE IT!!!!Has the options I wanted and a few I could have lived without ( well, until I found out just how nice it is to have heated seats lol ) All in all it was a killer deal at 10 grand for me. Now if only my new rims and rubber would get here.......
