Premium Gas in the RT?!
I was looking at a 2001 RT when I found out it takes Premium!
Is this nessesary or can you use regular?
What are the consequences of using regular.
Shame on me for not knowing.
Thanks

you need to use the higher octane rated gas because the RT's came with a different computer tune which makes use of the higher octane rating to produce more power/torque than the regular engine (not by much tho) and if you dont use the high test gas you will end up with pinging at the very least, just use what the book calls for and your truck will be happy
Some 2000 year R/T Durango's came with the minatory 91 octane requirement. I think they were the early build dates only of 2000 or they were manufactured at a specific factory? Some even say that these specifically had R/T heads in those models only!
As far as I know they only used 1 head and the only difference was the advanced timing/fuel & air computer tune requiring the use of the 91 octane for a slower burn. However this could also be because of the aggressive computer tune and R/T heads if in fact the head is a true R/T and it would need the 91 octane.....just sayin!
The later build of 2000 (or whatever) and all the way to the 2003 models were only an aggressive computer tune but could run 87 octane. I almost got my hands on a set of R/T factory heads remanufactured and polished but missed out by 1 day. The cost was something like $1000 bucks without a core.
Personally, I have always wanted to disassemble one of these engines just to see what if anything is different!
