2000 dodge durango 4.7 220,000kms, when driving or idling the truck the oil pressure drops off of to 0 and then somtimes returns back to just under the centre mark. i have already had the heads of this car and there wasnt really any sludge, not sure whats in the oil pan though??? is this a problem with the oil pump??? thanks for any help.

I would run a manual oil pressure check before going through the trouble of replacing an oil pump. The oil pressure gauge in our vehicles is more for driver entertainment than an accurate oil pressure reading. For example 4psi at idle is "safe" and a 4.7 will run 25-100 psi at 3k rpm. Plus the oil pressure switch is really just an on off switch anyway.

 

The oil pressure sending unit is not an on/off switch. It actually operates like a rheostat and works off of the grounding principle. More pressure equals more ground to send to your gauge. If you took off the wire on the sending unit and grounded it, your gauge would peg all the way over, real fast way of telling if your gauge works or not.
