I hate drum breaks.....

The fronts took a little time to compress but they were easy. I also cleand out the front barrings and repacked them with grease. Flushed the break system.

One of the rotors was warped so I got 2 new rotors. I took the drums to a shop to machine them smooth just for good measure even though they were fine.

The pedal is much stiffer now since there is less fluid in the system to compress. One of the old rotors was warped so it pushed out the pads that also made the pedal soft.


If you can stay away from drum breaks. I am serious.

 

how many miles on the truck that you actually needed to change the drums??

they usually outlast the fronts at least 3 or 4 to one, i know that i have only CHECKED the rear drums, never changed them because they simply dont need it as frequently

 

Rears are really not that bad if you have the right tools. The very first time i did rear drums all I had was verybasic hand tools and yes removing and installing the springs are a pain with just pliers. I went to sears they sell a kit for rear drums that come with brake spring pliers and the works. Now I can remove cleam and install in under 20 min per side. Its just a matter of having the right stuff

 

+1 Rears are not hard. It is just a part by part replacement. The rights tools help A LOT!

BTW, "rear breaks" indicates something is BROKEN as in BREAKS in the rear. That of course is not what you you were referring to. Correctly, it is "rear brakes". Your opening sentence read correctly makes one believe you Broke your Drum somehow.

Many people do actions by need alone. I did it because I wanted to.



The main reason that I had difficulty with the drums is just working with the springs. I knew where the parts went, but it was just hard to assemble.

 

Nothing wrong with routine maintenance.

 

nope, nothing wrong with it at all, i just prefer to have money that doesnt need to be spent in my pocket for stuff i want to spend it on

 

I clean and adjust my rear brakes at least annually. I swap the winter wheels on at Halloween and the summer wheels on at Easter. Gives me two opportunities to catch it. The D stops on a dime.
