Finally resolved. It was a bad radiator. The water pump was in good shape but since I had it off, I just replaced it too. The radiator was trash. Now my needle is well left of the center of the gauge. I have a feeling it will be a while before I can stop constantly looking down at the gauge every couple of minutes while I drive.
