The piece of snap ring that came apart is from the direct clutch pack. If reverse and 1st,2nd and 3rd gears are shifting fine, the problem is in the overdrive unit. Thats were the direct clutch pack is at. Here is what you can do. remove just the rear overdrive unit, the transmission does not need to be remove to make this repair. Then you need to remove the o/d clutches and then the direct clutch assy. you will need a press to push the clutch pack down and remove what broken pieces that was left. If you want i can send the information on how to do the job. Or you can take it to a shop. You also need to let the shop know that you know something about transmissions, that way they can't B/S you into an overhaul. Be sure to replace the filter and clean out any other broken pieces in the pan ansd around the valve body.

Well, 2nd and 3rd are definitely not shifting fine. It takes too long to shift. Either you have to take it to 5k to make it shift or play with the throttle until it shifts.

I maybe comfortable just getting an overhaul. I don't want to get one component replaced, then have something else go wrong in the near future.

I do work on my own stuff, but I don't have the time or a lot of resources.

So I took it to a trans shop. Looks like the clip is out of the direct drive drum where the 2-3 clutches live. I went and saw the parts, it tore up the drum, band, clutches, and the torque converter got metal shavings in it.

So hopefully I will have it back in a couple days.
