Default A/C help!!!

Hey, got a quick question for everyone... I have a 2000 D with the 5.9 and today the A/C went out and comes in and out every so often. Well when I got home I smelled a bad rubber smell, popped the hood and the A/C part of the engine was smoking, it looked like possibly the clutch was stuck in and the motor was not going and the belt was just spinning itself on the stopped wheel. I can use all the help in the world, as I know little about what could be a good fix for this, thanks. Oh and the air blows fine when it's on A/C it just blows warm air as if there is no A/C. And, yes it just got charged with freon a couple months back, and just checked it not too long ago, and was not overcharged.

EDIT: I just checked it again and when I turn off the air, nothing out of the ordinary. When I turn the A/C on high, nothing out of the ordinary and it blows ice cold air just fine. When I turn on the A/C on low, it blows out cold air then when the clutch disengages it starts doing the smoking and blows out the warm air until I turn the air off, then I have to go thru the process of turning it on high A/C and turning it off when I freeze my face off. WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!

it sounds like your compressor's clutch is going out. you really don't wanna drive it while this is happening.. its a must fix..
option 1) not sure if you can replace the clutch on its own.. must cars you must replace the entire compressor when the clutch goes.. expensive because a shop is the only one that can do this because you MUST evap the A/C system and then refill it once work is complete.
option 2) you can go to your local auto store and buy an A/C Bypass serpentine belt.. The belt will cost around 15 bucks and all it does it takes the A/C outta the drive system.. this is a temp fix that wont cost around 500-700 bucks...
